Hello Guys
As mentioned I inspected the rifle and was quite impressed with its originality.
I am not any sort of expert on describing firearms but here's what I'd say about this one . . .
I don't know the exact model, it looks like a "plain jane" sporter, possible a model 176 although I do not have any reference books to verify this.
No Bolt. Bore strong with no pitting, not dark but not bright either, looks like it would shoot satisfactorily as throat is ok. Original bluing, faded and worn. No pitting that I could see, all sight elements present, not drilled or tapped, no additional holes. Stock looks like it has been carried a lot and has many dings, with one mysterious area on the point of the comb that looks like it has been knocked against something metallic for some time (or chewed by something mysterious !!). Checkering is practically worn off. Original butt-plate. Has been re-oiled. 1927 manufacture (if I recall correctly)
Now the kicker, it has been offered to me. I want to determine a fair price. The seller recognizes that they need to be realistic, and that I'm taking the risk on finding/making a bolt. I have long wanted one of these but will not countenance "ripping off" a genuine vendor.
I would be very grateful of your collective opinions on the value of this rifle, either to you personally, maybe what you think it might make at auction e.g. gunbroker, or if you could refer me to any further information that might assist in setting a value. Please be aware that I will be showing this thread to the vendor.
Cheers
Foster
