I have been trying to find the Harrington & Richardson Arms Co. patents that go with the patent dates stamped on a little 44 Caliber single barrel I have. Searching by date is a pain!! Sure wish these old shotgun manufacturers had stamped Patent Numbers instead of dates on these old guns!!

At any rate the one I haven't been able to come up with is Feb. 20, 1900. Anyone have a suitable Patent to go with that date?

Thanks in advance.

Gun manufacturers sometimes purchased patents from other persons or other companies. Other times they were licensed to use the patent. In those instances the patent will be under the name of the person or company that received the patent and not under the name of the gun maker.

634,935, firearm
643,938 firearm, recoil operated
644,040 firearm ejector mechanism by Bye
643,984 gun magazine bolt by Ross

I find the above firearms related patents for Feb. 20,1900. Have not looked any up, but it seems Bye may have some relationship with Harrington and Richardson.

Later, just checked the Martin Bye patent, and I think that's your gun's patent.

Daryl nailed it. It is the Bye Patent 644,040.
"SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent 644,040, dated February 20,1900.
Application filed December 21,1899. Serial So. 741,103"

http://www.google.com/patents?printsec=a...p;q&f=false

That date shows up on the H&R Model 1905. It looks like Martin Bye was a major designer for H&R.

Thanks Daryl, 644040 is the one I was looking for. Wonder why it didn't come up when I was searching under Harrington & Richardson with the dates bracketted? I got the one a week later 644,402?!? Two of the other Patents were were also Martin Bye assigned to H&R, another by Homer M. Caldwell which I can't see how it possibly applies, and finally one by Andrew Hanson.
