Any one know where I can find out more info on Hubertus... I picked up a super danty little 16 gauge b/c the price was right. Not sure what I am going to do with it yet... might sell it here but thought I would do some research first.

I can post pictures in a little but... any source of info would be greatly appreciated... google searching turned up very little in terms of shotguns...

Thanks

Here are some pictures... interesting gun... only weights 5 pounds 7.125 ounces! Its ovre bored .02 but Buck Hamlin looked it over for me and thinks that original... barrel wall thickness is still .023 at its thiniest and it has about .020 choke on both sides... i am wondering if its going to shoot like the overbored HE grade fox guns... it has two small cracks at the head of the stock that need to attended to prior to shooting so I have not shot or patterned it. horn trigger guard, 2 9/16 chambers. With a refinished stock and a new pad, this gun would be a great gun in the field.

I hope these flats are clear enough for someone to read and give me a clue about the gun...

Hubertus, the patron sankt of the hunter, was the trademark of Immann(Immanuel) Meffert, who founded his firm in 1839. The proof date looks to be October of 1935 with both tubes choked and proofed for/designed for shot. During the period this example was made in the 1930s, Meffert was churning out say 1000 examples per year. Justin, son of Immann Meffert, made an executive decision that the firm could turn out 3 standard quality longarms in the time it took to make a highend longarm. In 1930 the Meffert firm offered a light double using only steel parts with some more or less in a skeleton fashion. Then a more robust Dural/aluminum was discovered and the result was the Dural/lightweight drilling. Times were tough in the mid 1930s and these tubes wear an older Krupp crossed cannons trademark. Being Krupp and along with what looks to be a "Caveman" with a "Staff" on the underside of the right tube below the "Crown" over "U" points that the tubes were sourced from Sauer. Tight chambered 16 being a A&D with lower scears. I'm not sure why the "German Craftsmen of Suhl" or "German Workers of Suhl" is below "Hubertus" but this isn't the 1st time I've seen it. Maybe something to do with export? If there isn't a "70" on the extractor, the chambers will be 65mm.

Wow! Great info! Thanks! Is there any known resource on these guns?

The chambers measure out at close to 2 9/16"

Can you confirm on the underside of the left tube below what may be a "J" or pointer/arrow along with the Krupp steel tube type there is a "Caveman" with a "Staff"?? 1st I'd ask that you join the German Gun Collectors Association( www.germanguns.com ) and support the cause. Either the info may appear in upcoming journals or you can purchase back issues, which of course can be purchased without being a member. There isn't one source as of yet. 2 9/16" would equate to 65mm. RST has a fine line of hunting cartridges while Polywad( www.polywad.com ) carries quality plinking and target type cartridges. Gamebore's F2s are excellent and for some reason make a distinctive sound as well as can be picked out of the crowd when ignited, but are difficult to locate in American large shot sizes. Occassionally Midway(maybe 12 bore only??) will have them on clearance. Firearms Service in Kentucky, www.firearmservice.com ???, sometimes is a source.

To add just a bit of info to Raimey's excellent reply, you mentioned that the barrels were "overbored .02" - the gauge marks of 15 and 16-in-a-circle show that at the time of proof the gun was chambered for 16 gauge shells and the bore diameter was 15 gauge, roughly .680" or so, pretty much spot on to what you measured.

I have bought shells from RST as I have many 2 1/2" guns.

I am out of town on travel this week but will look into this weekend when I get home and see if I can locate the "caveman and staff" There is definitely a DEEP stamp of some sort that reminded me of the normally deeply struck whitworth steel stamp.

I will also join the germanguns website to at least support the cause.

Steve,

Thanks for the info on the bores! My gun smith though they were original but was unaware of how to prove it.

ellenbr,

It does not appear to a caveman with a staff to me.

Its the same symbol that is stamped on the flats above the word SUHL and looks more like a bird but I don't think that is what it is....
On the flats there is a Crown over W and on the barrels there is a Crown over S.

Sorry about the pictures... they will automatically tomorrow.
