I am moving to the University of Oklahoma after many years of living in the east. We are excited about the idea though we know nothing of the area other than something called tornadoes.

Can anyone provide information or recommendations or contacts involving double guns (including shops and shows), sporting clays, bird and waterfowl hunting opportunities? I realize that this is not a totally “on target” question for the Forum, but the membership is broadly knowledgeable and geographically distributed.

Thanks in advance--

Berrien Moore

See George Caswell/Champlin Arms at Woodring Municipal Airport in Enid. A great stock of high end guns.

Western Oklahoma has some of the best quail hunting found anywhere and although I haven't read any reports with all of the surface water in eastern Oklahoma the Water Fowl hunting should be good also.

Wonderful folks in Oklahoma, with a remarkable capacity to endure bad weather. They don't have issues with Yankees like on the other side of the Red River, but you might work a bit on the New England accent; or just tell everybody you're from Kansas smile

Back when I had to work for a living the company that I worked for sent me to UO at Norman for a three week mini course and I liked Norman OK. Nice place with friendly folks.

Will you be cutting back on the travel now with your new job? If so we can talk a time or two wink

'Way Western OK has great (but not easy) pheasant hunting. Be prepared to shoot at long ranges at big wild birds. Your grouse and woodcock experience won't help any, but it's pretty darn exciting! Think New England without trees, brush, mountains, water.....just grass, full of game. A new world to explore!

You live in Universties?

If you are moving form the state of NH to the state of OK, and you like guns, it's like saying "I'm moving from a nunnery to the Playboy Mansion."

I don't know much about hunting in New Hampshire but there are wild Bobwhites in Western Oklahoma. Some public land too. Also lots of dove. Overrun with deer and hogs. Would think those stinky ducks and geese would be out and about too.

In Northwestern Oklahoma there is a large Fedeeral Grasslands that is open to the public.

Because of sandburrs you will need to learn about booting a dog. I use motorcycle innertubes and duct tape. WalMart has red, green, blue, hot pink, yellow, orange, black, and white duct tape. I really like the way the colored duct tape looks on the dogs. No charge for that bit of trivia. My second favorite boot is the "Lewis" black molded rubber boot made in Oklahoma. Again duct tape works best for holding it on.

If you join local NSTRA (National Shoot To Retrieve Association) regional assocation you will meet many avid quail hunters. There may also be a bird dog club in Norman.

I would guess that as far as bird hunting you are going to be happy.

Best,

Mike
