My Friend is a freak of Nature. He's well over 6 1/2 feet tall, and his knuckles drag the ground when he walks. Seriously, He has the longest darn arms I've a ever seen!!
Needless to say, every gun he has tried to shoot doesnt fit him, so he bought a browning 525, and had Weinigs build him a stock to his dimensions. This took well over a year for him to have wood added here and there,9To the original stock) developed a Palm swell for it , and finally get it so it fit him. Then he sent that Blank to Wenigs for them to make the "real thing"
The piece of wood they used was just amazing.(athough it nearly took a whole tree) Really nice. He asked me to finish it for him! I agreed.
What I used was Spar Urethane, many thin coats, and then rubbed it out to a great finish! I was pretty pleased.
He doesnt want the stock checkered, but I am going to mebe try and convince him otherwise, IF its possible to have the stock checkered AFTER the finish is applied.
Is this something that can be done, or is it a Huge pain in the petuty for someone???
Thanks in advance
Gooser

Gooser, No problem, in fact checkering after finishing is pretty much stockmaking standard practice. Then when the checkering is done, it gets a couple coats of thinned out finish.

Freak of nature! Knuckle dragger! Man it's tough being tall around the vertically deficient. As to your question, usually the checkering is done last after the stocks been finished. Steve

There are no stupid questions but there can be stupid answers. One of the great things about this BBS is the level of great answers one can get! David

Fairly difficult to have "The First book Of Checkering". Monte Kennedy wrote the seminal book on the subject over 50 years ago!

Mr Ron Vella, My apologies to you for my 'Error", typing skills are not my Forte'It should have read,"HIS" first book on Checkering. As to The Late Monty Kennedy's'Checkering and Carving of Gunstocks,Samworth Press 1952.My 1st Edition is held together with Duct-Tape, and has many entries written by my former 'Students'from back to the 1970s. When one of them completed his'Time' in my Workshop, I presented them with a New Copy of"MT"s book. Crossedchisles....Also Dont know why I've'posted twice???????

With a stock that big it will need checkering of a lower number of lines per inch to look proportional.
Hmmm a whole tree huh, don't know if they make tools that will do 1 line per inch?

Note of information. It is not rare to find guns without checkering. If you think about it a bit, guns for winter use, in very cold areas, need not be checkered as gloves are worn eliminating the "need". Best, John
