So we are finally getting to setting up the etchant tanks in the new shop and I noticed that the new version of etchant carried by radio shack does have Ferric Chloride in it, but it also has Hydrochloric acid in it. Has anyone tried using the new stuff for refinishing damascus barrels? Thanks for your input gents.

This is for etching between coatings to bring out patterns or for the primary etching before you start?. I am nervous about the HCL as it is a strong acid even if it is 1 or 2%. I will do a test etch on one of my testing barrels and see what happens using 1% HCL.

I found some Ferric Chloride someplace in Illinois. I bought 4 gallons of it and have 3 unopened. Seems like with shipping it was around $100. I gave up on refinishing damascus barrels and would gladly sell/trade the 3 unopened jugs if somebody needs it.

What % of ferric chloride? Trades are usually very welcome around the shop.

Last fall I bought two bottles to keep on hand. I have a partially opened one that I have been using for the last two years. I went down and compared the two. The old one was a clear bottle and just had a label stating PCB Etchant Solution, use full strength, contents Ferric Chloride (Fe C13)
New bottle is white states same thing, contents; water, Ferric Chloride, Ferrous Chloride and Hyrochoric Acid.

I haven't tried any of the new stuff yet. I keep the old used stuff in my dipping tank which is 3" x 36" PVC pipe with a cap and a screw on top. I believe the solution rate was 15% Ferric Chloride and 85% water. The dip time was 5-10 seconds depending on effect wanted.
I will be doing a few more barrels as soon as the humidity goes up. My rusting box with a lid, light and warming plate in the winter months does not get a lot of humidity for a good job. The summer months I can get 85% humidity in the box which makes for a nice job. Plus it is easier to flood the barrels after dipping with a hose instead of trying to use a sink.

Steve,

I have been using Brownell's rust blue solution to do my B/W jobs and it has hydrocloric acid in it. The barrels do not show any ill effects by using this stuff, and of course, it is on the barrels for hours at a time. They come out as smooth as glass.
