I have been learning a lot, fixing up old sxs's of late. This board has been a tremendous help to me. Because of that, I wanted to share with everyone one of several projects I'm working on. I recently rescued a 12b hammer gun that was left for dead. I bought it primarily to challenge myself, because it had a major partially repaired break at the wrist, and I wanted to see if I could perfect a method to make the repair in a checkered area invisible, or at least nearly so.
So, I bought some checkering tools (having never tried that before) and dove in head first, first filling in the rest of the crack, filing it down, then refinishing, re-checkering, and then blending the dark splotches of the repair into the rest of the checkering. I added some dark streaks to the stock too, since it was about as exciting as a canoe paddle. Teaching myself as I went, it was so much fun seeing a gun brought back to life, and become a thing of beauty again. Here are some before and after pics:
