I e-mailed Richard Gallyon and he said they have nothing before 1912. Has anyone ever had any luck with Birmingham proof as far as proof date, barrel wall thickness at proof, gun going back for reproofing, things like that?

The gun at proof was marked 12B/14M. This would suggest full and full choke which was likely .040 thou or so. My guess would be that the barrels have been shortened and possibly backbored which could/would still give you 30 thou in both barrels.A little time with a bore micrometer would give you the current bore diameters and whether there is any parallel flat left at the muzzle. If the current choke tapers all the way to the muzzle this might confirm the above. JMHO, actually it's Just My Humble Guess!!! The proof marks and look of the gun fits the 1879 date.
Better to keep your mouth shut and be thought stupid, than open it and confirm.

Ithica, there are no production records for that gun. The best you can do is piece together info. from old catalogues and books. have fun, justin

Pics should have been taken outside with flat light but that's hard to come by at 9:30 at night. Outside light might have made a better picture, but the stock on that gun would look great even in the dark!...Geo

In addition to the "NOT FOR BALL" mark that Terry mentioned there is "CHOKE" which replaced the previous mark in 1887.
There is also the crown over S(?) which has been discussed a lot previously. Has anyone determined what it is?

Hard to tell from the pics...it appears to have a full pistol grip and grip cap.

Joe, yes a full pistol grip with grip cap, apparently the same as the buttplate, possibly horn? Geo, so far all I have done is wipe 130 yrs of grime off the stock. I think there is some gorgeous wood hiding under there. Terry, what is the 12B/14M ??
This is my first English gun so I'm still learning about them. As you may have guessed all my previous sxs have been Ithaca.

12b/14m = 12 ga. bore and choked to 14ga. muzzle. The barrel length suggests it's been cut.
A full pistol grip is unusual....I noticed the initial plate looks awful high on the stock.

I have a 12 bore Premier Grade from the same era and it has a similar pistol grip with an engraved metal grip cap. The wood looks like the typical high grade wood that Scott put on their medium and high grade guns. Oval locations varied up and down the stocks. Looks original to me.... ................................................................... You know your old, when a well-shaped sidelever quickens your pulse

I hope to get it to someone who can accurately measure it for me as I don't have a bore mic. The length of pull is about 14-1/8 so I don't think the stock has been trimmed.
