Do the replacement screws available from galazan, brownells, etc for Fox, Parker shotguns need to be heat treated after fitting? I'm guessing yes, how do you all do this (assuming the action will not be re-case colored)? Kasenit, something else? Thanks

Yes, Kasenit, or send them off to have them colored. Either way.

Yes, Kasenit, or send them off to have them colored. Either way. Does the screw steel really need the hardness of the case (really soft) or is it for the surface finish?

screws slots damage way too easily if not hardened.

Kasenite does a good job but leaves a nasty gray finish that I haven't had much luck coloring.

Slow heat, then quenched in oil. You can pretty much pick your color, or polish back to silver. Too hard,[i.e.kasenite] will get them too brittle. Water quenching the same. Jim

mild steel does not become too hard from kasenit....your method works nicely with oil quenching steels.

Perhaps these after market screws are made of soft steel. I've never given that any thought. I can't recall ever having run across a soft screw. Or should I say, too soft. I typically make them out of drill rod. The ones I'm "cleaning up a bit" have all been pretty much hard in the first place. I mean, I've never checked for actual Rockwell. This is based mainly on results with a file.

Something I'v been doing for a few years that comes out looking very simular to case coloring is to guench the part in an un-heated "hot caustic" blueing satls solution. It doesn't get the part as britel as cold water and the color of the part is motteled blue/brown/gold. With a little practice parts come out looking very nice. The solution I use is about a 50/50 hot tank solution and distilled water. Un-heated "hot salts" are usually a heavy sludge with a thick hard crust on top. Thats why I diluted the solution to 50/50 so it stayed in a liquid form.
