Reading the “Ugly Gun” thread made me think of the wall hanger I have out in the shop. Around 20 years ago a friend gave me this muzzle loading side by side shotgun which he rescued from an old barn that was being taken down. No one knows where it came from, but it is interesting. Each side plate has “Duggan” engraved in a nice script. There is engraving on the side plates, the upper and lower tang, the trigger guard and the hammers. Notice the back woods repairs. This gun is in restorable condition. Barrels appear to be steel. About 1/2" from the end of the barrels the bores are right barrel 0.658" and left barrel 0.648". Balance point is 7 inches in front of the trigger guard. With my hand at the front of the forend, the gun balances nicely.

Photos below.

The stock has about ½ inch cast off to the right. Note the long spur on the butt plate and the brass inlay just behind the upper tang.

Barrels are 33 inches long, weight is 9-3/4 pounds.

Interesting old gun. I would assign it to a place on the wall. IMO, restoration time and money would be better spent on a gun in better condition. There are lots of them out there.
First, make sure it's not still loaded. Sometimes they are left that way for many years and could still fire.

I have no plans to restore this thing, it has a nice home on the shop wall. Time and money are better spent on things like 404 & 500 Jefferys and such.

Yep, when I got it, I ran the ramrod (original is still with the gun) down the barrels and the right barrel had a charge, which I pulled. Out came a wad of paper, a leather overshot wad, about 2 ounces of shot, another leather wad, and a congealed lump of black powder.

Hi,
Sorry I misunderstood your intentions. I thought you were going to restore it.

No apology needed, I was trying to imply the condition. My error in misleading.

Restorations are best left to the valuable named guns, such as a Holland or a Purdey or Westley Richards.

Besides, I am not a shotgun guy and know little about them!

My guess is this is a dollied up trade gun. It is anyone's guess where the gun was made or by whom. It is just something to hang on the wall along with those shed elk antlers. It would be fun to know the full story of the gun!
Thanks!
