Just had a friend give me a little hammer double with no name on it. Pretty much a beater, that's why he gave it to me. But it's an interesting gun in that I can't figure out what gauge it is.

It's obviously a shotgun, smoothbore, no sights, etc. At first glance I thought it was a 28 gauge but then looked closer and it was too small so I thought maybe a 32 gauge. I got it home and checked it against my shell collection but even a 32 won't go in it. It's bigger than a .410 or a .44 XL though, quite a bit bigger.

Is there another gauge between those two that I'm unaware of? I've collected paper shells for ages and have never seen or heard of anything but I never claimed to know everything.

I'll post a pic of it and the proof marks as soon as I get a chance.

Is it a 9 mm shot shell? Some of the Belgian garden guns were made in 9 mm and I am sure several other gauges. Might have to do a chamber cast to be sure.

If it's bigger than a .410, it wouldn't be a 9MM. If you could measure the chamber ID, that would help.

9 mm is not bigger than 410.
I guess 36G (bore .506" or 12,85 mm).
36G L=50,8 mm
Case
D case = 12,00 mm
D rim = 13,60 mm

Mr. Legg said if it's larger than a .410 bore it could no be a 9mm as I read his post.

Yes, as I read their posts Geno & Jim are in total agreement & both are right. If its bigger than a .410 it cannot be a 9mm. The 36 Gauge would certainly be an option as Geno pointed out.
This would of course be a "True" 36 gauge. I beleive that in the past some makers of the .410 labeled their guns as 36 gauge which was of course incorrect as was the 12mm label.

36 gauge is a new one on me, have to keep on the lookout for a shell to add to my gauge set. Anybody know if they were ever produced in the US? I've always stuck to stuff that was made here, all my others are various US makers. Thanks guys, very interesting stuff.

I was just pointing out a couple smaller cartridges.
I'm pretty sure the 32 and 36 are readily available from the euro shot shell companies.
I had a Flobert garden gun for a while.
