Local pawn shop has a Magnum Auto 5 with a carved stock. The scene depicts a German Shepherd or an elk pointing a covey of boiled eggs that have eyes and legs.....I think.

I have seen a similar scene on an old tapestry I believe. Perhaps it actually depicts quail eggs in the nest at the moment of hatching, and they aren't hard boiled at all????? Must be that rare breed of pointing German shepherd. Aren't those carved buttstocks wonderful???

What you found sounds like amateur "Wood Ripper" job. The work of Horst Weihrauch is simply delightful.

The asking price was $550.00 undoubtedly trumped up by the "unique" art work. Carved stocks just aren't my cup of tea, although I've had some German rifles that were done pretty nicely. A close friend has an original Schuetzen rifle that is carved from stem to stern in typical Teutonic fashion, but the real kicker is the engraving scene on the action which is of a baby wearing a top hat, holding what I assume is a bottle of champagne smoking a cigar!!! What the heck is that all about?

This cannot begin to compare with the Remington 11-48 12 ga. complete with Cutts Compensator, that showed up on MD's lower Eastern Shore at a firehouse gun show last fall. The entire right hand surface of the stock depicted a rabbit hunting scene carved into the wood in deep relief, including 5 or 6 Beagle hounds AND the rabbit they pursued, all done in full color with enamel house paints. The background consisted of grass and brambles and a marshscape in the distance. Like the painted canoe paddles and handsaws up in New England curio shops, it was a hard gun to walk away from. A definite MOMA contender, and a priceless addition to any eclectic collection of true American folk art. (I passed because it only had the X-tra Full Goose tube). KBM

Ken, Your friend has one of the seldom encountered, "Infant Churchill" commemorative schuetzens!
