I have a large frame Martini sporting rifle with a saftey lever on the upper right side of the receiver. This saftey doesn't work, and I seem to remember reading that this is a common problem. Any advice or info will be much appreciated.

Safety lever should be engaged,(pull back)when cocking lever is fully open.If that doesn't work,sorry I can't help.

Without a better description, I cant be sure, as I am somewhat unclear as to what is "upper right side" but it sounds as though you have a Greener type action. Google "Greener police gun" and something will come up.
The military Martini Henry safety was located beside the trigger guard. It was not used for very long as I understand.

If a sporter with a pivoting side safety on the receiver, 1st take down the action and make sure your tumbler has the extension for the safety - quite often, these were removed or the entire tumbler was replaced with a military one, which doesn't have the safety extension.
This is actually a pretty good safety in that is cams the sear up and blocks it, instead of just immobilizing the trigger. If a Greener GP action, the safety was self-setting - another reason to 'deactivate' it...

I think the American made Peabody Martini had the safety in the trigger guard and may have only locked the trigger. Years since I looked at one.
