get some brass wool (like steel wool only, obviously, brass - google it). Rub gently with gun oil. Should remove rust without removing bluing unless of course the rust is bad enough to have left pits.

Why don't you boil the bbls first, maybe the red rust will turn black and you just have to card it ( rub off the excess with 0000 steel wool.)
