My dad was a custom saddlemaker in California and I remember him using saddle soap and Lexol on repairs that he did. Seemed to work real well.

I vote for Coach Leather Lotion. Have used it for 30 years.
Neatsfoot is rendered from cattle hooves. Use it on workboots and baseball gloves. Not antique leather goods.

Out there doing it best I can.

Been using this stuff on a old pony saddle I didn't have the heart to throw out. It softened up and looks like new. Works good.

I always used saddle soap over the years. On smaller things like my leather covered butt pads, I just wipe them with Clenzoil. It always works great for me.

I recommend Ballistol. It does a nice job of rejuvenating and protecting leather, along with being a first class CLP for guns and other metallic and/or wooden objects. Ballistol will soften and darken leather, however, and suede leathers do not get along any better with Ballistol than they do with other oil-type dressings.

Pecard Antique Leather Care is really, really good, but it darkens a lot the leather, be careful in using it!
Lexol cleaner and conditioner are effective too, and don't darken the color. You must use them very sparingly, to avoid too much suppleness in the leather.

Obenaufs is a bees was base instead of petroleum works well and the liquid version is breeze to apply.

everytime I use Neatsfoot oil I get problems with white mold on the leather. I now use Nikwax on my leather cartridge bags and gun cases etc.

I still use Neatsfoot on my leather work boots, only because it is cheap - they still go mouldy! I have heard it said that NF oil rots stitching - this is probably true if it is the old natural fibre cotton threads etc.

It probably goes mouldy as it is from cattle hooves and is at the end of the day a natural "food stuff" oil - and probably goes mouldy just like old food!

I used to use Neatsfoot oil on my hunting boots, until someone told me it would not let the moisture out and would rot the leather. I swear it was great until they told me that, and sure nuff it started rotting my boots. Ignorance is bliss.

Beeswax is great for the stitching if you get to it in time.
