i know this has come up before but what were the factory choke markings savage used in the '40's? have a 720 barrel that has 4 stars but there's a space between the one furthest to the left and the next one. choke on that one measures to be IC. got another 720 barrel with a cutts and it just has one star. i'd suspect it was born full choke.
also, if i remember right, savage also used a letter for a date code. if so how does one read those.

'A' represents 1948, and each successive letter represents the next year. 'O' and 'Q' were not used, probably because of the similarity. After 1968 the guns were all serial numbered as required by the Gun Control Act...Geo

No "O" or "Q": http://www.wisnersinc.com/additional_info/stevens_date_code.htm

I posted from memory, which ain't all that great anymore. Your reference states the code was not used on other guns, but I've seen it on singles and on a lever 99...Geo
