Its a JayCee ... as in 'Higgins'. A model 100 made by AYA to be exact. Found myself in town today and by default [yard work from 1st light .. until the rain set in] and not being a fotbol nor football fan decided to visit one of the local P-shops that is open on Sunday and there it was .. a 16ga. w/28" M/F bbls. .020 & .036; 2&3/4" chambers; a single non-selective trigger; French walnut stock, decent figure w/proper grain orientation; ejectors; semi-beavertail forearm w/push button release; fine line/inch well executed chequering; solid rib, not some ventilated abomination like some AYA's & other SxS's were fitted with; double under bites; to scale frame .. $250, out the door! What's not to like? It made my rainy day.
Of course, now were I to list it here my parade might just get rained on, but WTH [what the hay]? I'm not going to do that.
Anyone know about these guns? When Sears had the 'deal'; what they listed for? Anything? It is actually nicer than several Matadors I have had at one time or another. Oh, and it is blued, sans [zero] any engraving; all the screw slots line up north to south and the butt plate is hard rubber & says 'J.C. Higgins' and the pistol grip cap is also hard rubber and says 'AYA; Eibar'. Metal is near 100%, wood has the usual array of handling mars, no dents, but chequering does have a couple of very small straifs in it from someone being careless. Still, I'm well pleased .. and who was it said that a double gun had to be expensive to be fun anyway?

Tw, it sounds like a great find, and with that kind of brand on it you cannot go wrong, ;-)
BTW, my first firearm (Christmas present almost 50 years ago) was a JayCee Higgins .22 single shot bolt rifle the kind you had to cock before firing.

Sounds like deja vu, all over again. A couple years ago, we were in Plymouth , MA. I bought a 12 ga. like yours, for $250, no tax, and they shipped it to my FFL holder, in Utah. I later traded it for something else at the Beinfeld show. It was a decent gun though, worth more than the $250, for sure. Worth FAR more than any Baikal or Huglu crap for 2 or 3 times the $250 price!

With the non-selective trigger, it is not a Matador but it must be very similar, and based on the same "platform" as the Matador. Those are solid shooters, worth way more than what you paid for it.
