Took Abby and a Fox A 12 out on the river for geese this morning. Bismuth #2 hand loads 1 1/8 @ 1200fps. Abby had to chase and dive for all four of the tough old winter birds. Winter birds pretty much need a 10ga and a ton of shot. Tried a new load first using 7625. That powder does not like 15 degree weather. They sounded like an air rifle. Good thing I had my old loads. I think I might try some BB. [img] [/img]

Nice looking Fox, Dog & Bag. Sorry Abby had to work so hard. I've been shouting about 7625 & cold weather ever since joining this board. I usually get phoo-phooed, everybody likes the low pressure for their guns. Problem is Slow Powder, Low Pressure @ Cold Weather ""DON'T GO TOGETHER"".

I listened to you, Miller, and switched to 700X. Low pressure, no problems.

Chux, as far as I know the gun is righteous/all orig. But I 've only had it for 4 or 5 years. I got it for field use to save some others from abuse. Alot of that shine on the stock is from WD 40 I had on my gloves. Seems that those I Talian semi,s that some people swear by need some special assistance in wet/cold environs. Like when Abby gets back in the boat and does her shake and their gun is close by. The guy actually tore his boot in his wader trying to unstuck the frozen bolt with his foot. Then he looks at me, I just told him "Do not blame the dog!" 700X huh. I've been using PB. I'll have to give that a look.

PB has a good reputation for this use. Being a medium burn rate, it generally, in selected loads gives a good combination of pressure/velocity ratio while maintaining good ignition characteristics. 700X is slightly faster as I recall, but there are still some good loads for it in reasonable pressure ranges. I have mostly loaded Hercules/Alliant powders for shotshell use with Green Dot being my favorite for my old ones. It is of a burn rate very similar to PB, but usually less expensive than the DuPont line.

Nice looking birds, gun and dog.
I don't know anything about the powders you mention, but good old blackpowder is just about perfect for goose hunting I think.
Enjoy your dinner(s).
