I am a Hobbyist at inletting stocks. To date i have only used semi inlet stocks.Done about a dozen.Fitting them and then finishing them.I want to do a little customizing to the guns receiver.Like scalloping and rebating. What is the right way to get the stock to fit after i make my changes to the receiver. Can i take a cheaper/lower grade wood or original fitted stock and refit it using bondo or accuglass to fill in the new rebates and scallopings as well as the stock dementions i want. Then have a new piece of higher grade wood inlett using the new pattern stock ,and refit it to the gun. This might not be the right way to do this.Do gunmaker approve of this way,or is there a better way.Again i just dont know. Thanks for your help.

Hi- I make a pattern and bed all parts
The better the pattern the better the finished stock will be
it gives you a chance to make changes and corrections
until you are satisfied

Thanks for the responses.I have another question.when you are done fitting the pattern stock, and are ready to send it to have a new stock inlet what do you need to tell them.(like tolerances )

Hi- I usually talk to them and tell the pattern is exact size
They can then machine the inletting undersize and the outside
oversize by 1/32 to 1/16 " this well give you some room to sand ect-it best discussed with the operator
I have had good success working this way
Making your own pattern gives you a chance to make changes
until you are happy -then get other people to have a look
Have fun with it
