I scratch hunt preserve birds. Those RGLs in #6 run out of gas at around 35 yds, IME. They are nice through tight constrictions when looking to open patterns a bit.

Beyond that B&P F2s are impressive. An Italian #5 is about US #5.5. Through mod/IM/F constrictions it swats these birds way past 40 yds and is what I use in my M-12 full gun when backing-up others. Their #4 is a true US #5, but I've never seen the need for it.

I have shot and continue to use a lot of the Remington and Federal 1 oz. 6s. I really have been impressed with the Federals and they pattern very well out of my gun. I have also used different Fiocchis, but have not liked them so much. I usually can find the Federal H1606, 16 Gauge, 2 3/4", 1 oz, 1165 fps, #6 lead at very attractive pricing as well. My 16 is fairly open-choked, so I don't use it much late in the season.

Mike,

That's some good stuff there. I've got a few of those around in #6 I use on squirrel and they're just as poisonous now as when they were new.

My first double, Lefever Nitro Special 16 gauge, came with almost a case of those when Dad bought it for me. I've been a fan every since!

Mike, I have Super Speeds in 7 1/2 and 4 and I just opened them up to look at them. They're as red as yours are and have the box inserts. Murphy.

Destry & Murphy,

I went on a collecting binge a few years back and wound up with a few boxes that weren't all that collectable. So I started shooting them and got hooked. Then I started shopping smart and laid in a lifetime supply in 20 & 16 ga for about $15/box. One ounce of #7.5 was pretty common in the 20ga and I've used them in red papers for grouse and woodcock the last 6-7 years. It patterns great in my 20ga Fox and, knock on wood, I've never had a missfire.

Now, I ask you, was there ever a prettier shell made than these lacquered ones from the 1930's?

Mike,

I've got a few of those lacquered shells and completely agree. They're just a pleasure to handle. Bought a box of 3 inch paper Canadian Imperials the other day and was pleasantly surprised to find that they were done this way.

I'm always on the lookout for good paper stuff to shoot. I've had a few misfires but nothing heartbreaking.

I'm envious of your #5 stuff, wish I had a few of those. I think everything I've got is either #6 or #4.
