Hi all, I have a double that I'd like to get tubed so I can use steel shot in her for ducks. The problem is that the outside bbl diameter is to small for Carlsons to fit (they require .825, mine is just at .800). So they are out. I know that Briley will come up, but I can't afford $500. I also can't afford to spend $3 for non-tox. My loads would be limited to #2 steel in 1 1/8oz.
So, does anyone know who can tube my gun that's reasonable for what I want to use it for?
If not, what do you think if I had the chokes let out to say .002 and .007. This is a modern double BTW.
Any help would be great!!
All the best!
Greg

I shoot steel 2 3/4 2's in a Miroku Daly opened to IC and Modified without problems. Steel naturally shoots tighter anyway, so I don't think choke tubes would improve the performance I get with IC &Mod. Tubes would make it more versatile though...Geo

Greg, as I've posted here and in Spanish Shotguns (SW.com), I shoot 2 3/4" #2 steel in my Grulla Pigeon gun with fixed .009"/.019" chokes with no problem. Stay more open than .025" and you should be fine. I hope this doesn't become a Parker Repo (sic) thread! Joe

Thanks for all your kind responses in the past with regards to this subject. Boy, I just want to make sure I don't do anything to screw up a good gun. I guess I just want to get that warm and fuzzy feeling. Rather than a lot of "I think" type answers, ones like yours is what I'm after. Folks who have and do use steel in fixed choked guns and what their experiences are. Thanks again, I do appreciate the help! All the best! Greg

You could try Mike Orlen, but I think your OD might be too small. I think the OD for the thin wall tubes is .805". michael.orlen@verizon.net Pete

You could actually tell us what kind of gun you have, and what your present choke constriction is, for starters. Yes, I shoot steel in all kinds of guns not made for steel, with good results. Some have a lot of choke. If you can avoid modifying your chokes and/or installing screw in chokes, you may save enough money to buy another gun.

Hi, the gun in question is a Bernadelli Italia (Hammer Gun) made in 1967. The present chokes are: .017 and .030
Thanks!!

Hi Greg,...if I'm not mistaken those tubes could be chrome lined which is a good thing for your purpose,..I would only open up the .030 to .020 if you shoot small pellets you should be ok,...nothing bigger than a 2 Today's modern steel loads are much better than they used to be especialy the wads.
Best

I am not completely sure if it true, but I was told that the barrels of my Bernardelli hammer gun were chrome-lined. Adam

Beware, Greg; chrome lining was used to keep bbls from rusting and make them easier to clean. It doesn't necessarily make them any better for use with steel shot. Joe
