I have a Lyman tang sight which is going to be mounted on a restored takedown Savage 99. The markings on the sight base are SA (for Savage) and 30 1/2. Can someone tell me what the 30 1/2 means? Thanks.

IIRC, 30 1/2 is the Lyman model number.

I'm using that same sight on my 1899H Savage Takedown, .22 HP. Works beautifuly. You may, or may not, have to install a higher front sight though.

The Lyman windgauge tang sight for the 1899 was called a 29 1/2 if thr stem had a flip down peep in the middle, and 30 1/2 if the stem took a screw in eye piece.

Thank you all for your replies, now I know what I have! This takedown is a .250-3000, and an early one. The front sight base appears to be part of the barrel itself and is slit front to back for a pinned blade. If a higher one is necessary it should be easy. Thanks again.
