Possibly will be looking at a double that according to the dealer needs relining. Who does this work on double rifles and what kind of dollar is involved.
Thanks in advance!

It's probably not very feasable. There used to be a fellow in Washington State who could re-cut rifling, but it was very expensive. Do you happen to have more details?

The actual relining isn't a problem--several gunsmiths do that very well. The problem is having the new bores regulated to shoot more-or-less to the same place. THAT requires someone who can do both things at once. If you find someone who claims to be able to do it, get references, and verify them.

You might contact Dan Pedersen at Classic Barrel and Gun Works (www.cutrifle.com) and ask him if he can do the work. I got his name from the guy in Washington I think Mr. Kofoed is referring to (I apologize that I've forgotten his name) when I was looking to rebore a Browning Lo-Wall from .22 Hornet to .32 H&R. He did a great job and I've enjoyed using the rifle since it was done. I don't know if he can do the regulation, but he was a square shooter and would tell you if he can't.

I don't think the proposed work is feasible. Double rifle barrels normally are very thin, so removing enough metal to insert a liner is going to be a big issue. Assuming it can be done, the cost of such a procedure would be high. What is the value of the end result? If the rifle is ragged out now you aren't going to end up with much.

What is the make, vintage, and caliber? There is no such thing as a "generic double rifle." They are all individuals.

Contact Kirk Merrington. He has the skill to make double rifle barrels from scratch, so he surely can answer your question. Just be ready for the sticker shock!

I have seen this done. The trick seemed to be starting with a fairly generous calibre and relining to a smaller (and, in the instance I recall) fairly low pressure one. This obviated the thin barrel problem Curl rightly pointed out and also gave some room for regulation. That said, it was an experiment rather than a commercial venture. The rifle in question was an old 43 Egyptian relined to 22 Hornet.

Leo is right as usual on this subject. I know of a little double rifle that started life as something in 8mm which was relined to 25-35. Couldn't hit the broad side of a barn after the reline. It had to be sent to K. Kercher in Bend to have a new regulating wedge built and installed AND then the rifle barrels regulated. it ended up shooting quite well with star shaped composite groups of 1.5 inches at 50 yards. Really good performance.... considering. Jeff
