I picked up my Samuel Mathews hammergun from the late Alfred Gallifent's shop. He was adding a wood extention to fit me and did a wonderful job as usual. Apparently, it was the last thing he worked on before passing. It was still in his workshop vise. I will still need to get the butt checkered and it still needs a few coats of oil. My question is what oil should I use on this gun? (1870 range) Should I just use artists linseed?
This gu has beautiful damacus 30" bbls and has seen little use in it's long lifetime. I killed a few preserve birds with it before I took it to Alfred and can't wait to shoot her tonight.
