Double / drilling newbie here. Over the years have had a handfull of shotguns ( primarily a handgun / .22 rifle collector ). All changed this week !!! Came home Monday with a Union Arms SxS, a beautiful Flues 20 ga., a JJ Weston, along with several pistols, Yeaterday I found 3 drillings and a double rifle, beautiful guns !! I drooled over them for 2 hours, took notes, went home and tried researching them. Found out little, but went back and bought them anyways. One is marked J.P. Sauer & Sohn, One Oswald Nerke Erfurt, other I havent looked at yet. The rifle is gorgeous !!! Marked G.L. Rasch / Gustav Kerstens, has a Jackenkroll scope mounted, in 9.3x74R caliber ( whatever that is ....). I will be up all night trying to hunt down what they are, values, etc.

Post some pics of the longarms. Ole Nerke was a firearms merchant and more than likely sourced his longarms from Suhl. The G.L. Rasch is proabably based on Kersten's lockup. A Jackenroll mount is found on the Swedish Mauser M/41 Snipers(6.5x55mm). Is it a sidemount or center? Pics would be most beneficial. Do you have specific questions?
Kind Regards,

Have tons of questions !!!! Where do I start ? I know almost nothing about these guns, other than I am amazed at the workmanship. Will try to post pics tomorrow.

Possibly break the longarms into a couple of groups and more than likely someone will have some info on each within the group.

I am heading out of town tomorrow for a few weeks, taking them with me to play with them. Is there really a place called double gun shop in Bloomfield N.Y. ? I will be in E. Aurora, about 45 miles away this Friday - Monday, would drop in with them if it is really there !!

You may just land up at Dave's house; I haven't a clue.

I believe that the Bloomfield address is just a mailing address for the owner of this site.
It sounds like you buy stuff when it intrigues you. I hope you got a good deal.

When looking at drillings pay particular attention to rifle caliber and make sure the piece has not had American gunsmithing done to it. I prefer 'R' cartridges with domestic .30-30 and .30-40 most preferable. Good Euro rounds include: 6,5x57R, 7x57R, 7x65R, 8x57JRS, 9,3x74R. Needless to say avoid extinct cartridge versions like a plague. I prefer ones with just plain rib and folding leaf sight to scoped ones unless the scope is modern in q-d mounts that return to zero after removal/replacement (like the Suhler claw mount). I do not care for 'vintage' scopes with dial-type elevation adjustment only and single coat of magnesium flouride coating on lenses or none at all. In reality these are less capable then modern $100 scopes adding nothing but dead weight to the drilling.

The scope on the rifle is a 4 opening claw type. One of the drillings has a 3 position claw side mount set up. I emailed the forum, no reply yet. I will be back that way Monday. When I get back to Greenville I will post pictures.

All things being equal one with bases and mounts is worth a premium over one with empty 3 or 4 "holes". I prefer old ones w/o bases of any kind unless the mounts will accept scope of modern construction and optical performance. Many folks like quality of construction on those old tubes. I mean no windage adjustment, single magnesium flouride coating on external glass surfaces or none at all, nothing left to prevent interior moisture condensation, no parts available.... hey whats not to like about them?
