In case I need to mount a scope on my recently ordered Hi-wall replica, does anyone know the number of a Weaver (or Weaver-type) one-piece base that could be easily adapted to the countour of a #3 profile octagon barrel? I don't want the classic two-piece blocks, since I'm planning (if it turns out my aging eyes won't work with the tang sight) to mount a low-powered, straight-tube scope like a vintage Redfield 2 3/4x or a K3, or a new Weaver V-3 or Burris 4x "Timberline". I like low power, wide field, and generous eye relief.

Is there a similar mount that will accept QD rings so I can switch back and forth between tang sight and scope readily in case the tang sight works for some situations but not for others?

Sorry for the newbie questions from a certified geezer; I'm getting forced into scopes by my eyesight.....

Thanks, guys; I'll look into both. I'm also going to haul out Frank de Haas' Single Shot projects book--I vaguelly remember he had some scoped 'walls in there....and Frank always did it the cheapest way.

Mike, Maybe this will give you some ideas. You can get a Weaver-type blank from Brownell's or Midway and contour it to fit your needs. I think they are nine or ten inches long and run $15-20. I bought one a couple of years ago to put on a takedown high wall that was drilled for Unertl bases. I wanted to mount a shorter scope without drilling more holes in the barrel. The rifle is mostly used for hunting, and although I originally used a Lyman Alaskan, I have since switched to a Weaver K6-W with the rectangular field of view, which allows more room under the ocular lens for thumbing the hammer.

Thanks, Dennis! I already mickey-moused a Brownell's tip-off blank onto my lowall parts gun .25-20, which had been tapped for two screws on the shank of the round barrel. So I just drilled the blank for matching holes and screwed it on, then fitted tip-off rings. Probably wouldn't work with a big kicker, but the .25-20 ain't. That one has a steel K-3 on it.

I'll check the catalogs for a blank with a flat bottom to match the octagon barrel on the C.Sharps, then have someone who actually knows what they're doing tap the barrel if I find one. Might have to shim the front end to accomodate the taper, tho--not sure I'm a precise enough filer to make it fit perfect.

Here are some pics of one of my rib treatments on a future low wall custom. I use copies of the now-discontinued Kimber/Warne Premier rib base stock in various lengths for various applications, and the system seems to work fairly well for single shot rifles especially.

The first pic shows the overall look, the second pic shows one possible recoil pin installation and the last pic shows the various original Kimber and Warne rings available for this size rib. This rib stock is slightly smaller than the still-available Talley-size rings & bases and is also the proper size to take any of the various tip-off style rings. This characteristic of taking tip-off rings IMO makes the Kimber/Warne size more versatile than the Talleys albeit not quite as readily available in recent years. It's also much daintier and IMO more attractive than any of the Weaver-size installations I've seen thus far, actually the rib is quite unobtrusive when the scope is removed. BTW this system ensures positive return-to-zero within no more than 1/2 (0.5) MOA variation, by actual shooting test. This system is almost identical to the old original G&H lever-release top mount.

This size rib stock is no longer made by Warne, however Brownell's sells aluminum rib stock in this size if you'd care for a lightweight alternative. I was lucky enough to have a friend who was kind enough to make me a selection of Warne-size steel stock in various lengths and configurations, so my own needs are squared away for the time being.
HTH, regards, Joe

Thanks, Joe. I used a similar setup on my .25-20; just happened to have two appropriate holes in the barrel already, so I utilized 'em. I like the idea of a "lightweight alternative" all right, but will have to do a better job of blackening the aluminum this time....(wish I had that "pocket anodizer" handy). Don't think I'll need the recoil pin on a .25-35, but I would like the lever-actuated QD rings so I can remove the scope easily.

You're right, nothing dainty or attractive about the Weaver installations; I have one on a custom #1A .22 Hornet and the best you can say for it is that it works well. An aesthetic low point on a sweet little rifle.....

What scope is on that Lo-wall shown? Very much what I had in mind. Some cognoscenti feel that the only scope that looks right on a 'wall is a long-tube Unertl/Lyman type "small game" or target scope a la "classic varminters," or a Malcolm-type scope like a buffalo rifle, both mounted on scope blocks. The compact old-school low-power fixed "deer" scopes work well for my eyes and hunting style and look just fine to me. Not too heavy, either. I don't try to shoot a country mile, tho--like to ease up on 'em.

Mike, it seems that you and I are tending the same way. This reminds me of an old saying but I can't decide which one, exactly...

"Great minds run in the same channels!"
"Fools think alike!"

Anyway, the scope in the pic is an old Leupold 1-4 variable that's scheduled to go on my 'Primitive' high wall when completed. I use the older longer scopes and like them for certain single shot applications, but also like the shorter modern scopes for others. The lever-release rings are an added bonus, a sort of lagniappe if you will, and are one of my favorite accoutrements for fine rifles.
Regards, Joe

Joe, I fear 99% of shooters would look at our 'walls and their price tags and punch the fool option....oh, well, at least us 1-percenters are enough to keep a few factories cranking (appropriate verb?) them out.

Low-powered variable scope has some appeal, for sure. I tend to keep my few variables "permanently" set on 2x, tho. When I need to see more ("manzanita or antler"?), up come the 8x40 compact binos.

Thanks for the info, ideas, pix!
