I am looking for any information that could be provided for an Austrian 7.7mm target rifle. I am posting for the owner and he would also like a very basic appraisal.
thank you!
best regards,
JBP

J.B. Patton:

It's a target arm, probably German or sourced from Germany "in the white", in 8.15X46R on the Carl Wilhlem Aydt patent #31291 of February 16, 1884 proved in August 1928 in Germany possibly in Zella-Mehlis. It has a Wiener Schaft(Viennesse Stock) and looks to be missing the globe sight. This original System Aydt looks to be etched rather than engraved; how deep are the images? Are there any markings on the sides of the breech block that houses the hammer and how many grooves are there in the rifling? Your choices were 2, 3, 4, 6 and express rifling. I think the spangled "H" is for Haenel, but let me check it and the Austria side panel reference to Schmledeeisen, which was probably the firearm merchant address. Or it could have been made for one of the Tyrol shooters.

Kind Regards,

Agreed. The action is an Original System Aydt. Does anyone do that sort of etching today? I have a very plain, undecorated Aydt deserving of similar illustration.

Pardon me, but any girl who can dance on a beer keg while holding 8 mugs in her hands is OK in my book!

Was the stamping of 7.7mm a reference to it's bore diameter, 8.15mm being groove diameter? If so, was that common practice with Germanic sporting/target arms?

Yeah, the 7.7mm was a bore diameter which was somewhat common at the time. Before 1910-1912, one would see the diameter in plug gauge values which were also bore diameter. But as always, don't assume with a Austrian/German longarm and slug the bore.

BTW, the 'Alle Teile aus Schmiedeeisen' just means 'all parts out of forged iron'. I isn't a brand or a manufacturer.

Worth a mention, unfortunately, is that somebody probably in this country drilled the action for a scope block. It would not be original. I'd guess there's a second on the bbl.

I notice your rifle is missing the rear sight.Check on the ASSRA sight as I believe there is a gentleman there who replicates these sights. As far as the holes on the action and bbl for scope blocks are concerned if you are going to use a scope then by all means use those origional ones. Or if not going to use ascope then use plug screws to fill up the existing holes. Frank

Frank46 is right -- the sight maker is Ron Heilman, from Washington. Just had him make a sight for mine - very nice man, excellent work...

for appraisal - you will see guns such as this on Gunbroker offered for anyhere from $1500 up to $4500. (and they tend to sit for a long time without being bought, especially without the rear sight...)
