Spent a couple hours in the shop this afternoon and made significant improvement...more finishing / polishing work to do.
I had three hones of 180/400/800grit on 34" shafts that I used with a 1/2" drill motor. I set up a 10 quart pail with 2 gallons of kerosene and used that as a constant source of lubrication by having one end of the barrels resting submerged in the pail...the hone completely submerged itself each time it traveled down to the submerged end picking up the kerosene each time.
The worst of the roughness was in the 3/4 of the bores closest to the chambers...1/2 to 2/3 really...and I was able to take care of a lot of it with the 180 grit hone. Then spent some time with the 400 grit and got the bores smoother with the front 1/4 of the bores starting to show a smooth shiny surface already.
Going to run up to the range in the morning and run a few shells through to see how it patterns...then come back, thoroughly clean it, and work on the bores some more...fun project.
