Good evening gentlemen and any ladies present. I was hoping someone could point me in a direction to get information on a couple drillings I now own. I bought a Colt Sauer last fall and was hoping to find out what 30-06 load the rifle and sights were regulated to. Most recently, I bought a JP Sauer Hammer drilling and need to find a couple parts ancillary items for it. Any contact information would be appreciated. Thanks

You might try to contact Joe at The Drilling Hotline.

For those that may not be aware. Thanks to the efforts of Steve Meyer there is now a German Gun Collectors Forum.

jjames the bullet weight should be stamped upon the barrels towards the breech. Should be in grams.

Thanks gents. Unfortunately the barrel flats don't provide that information on my Colt Sauer or at least I can't find it. The rifle barrel has 30.06 and the shotgun barrels have Full, Mod and 70, 2 3/4 stamped respectively. Other than the proof marks and the serial numbers that is all I see. I'll see what the folks at the advised new forum have to say

jjames,
I'm fairly sure your Colt-Sauer will shoot standard 30-06 loads quite nicely; I would try 180gr first. Or you could email the Sauer factory with the serial number and ask them to see in their records.
With kind regards,
Jani

yeh, try to find out. chances are they used rws load which is not going to be on local shelves in that colt. one never knows because i had rifle from german company where 300gr a-square solids were used to adjust express sights!
i'm not believer of targets included with firearms. just look at cz were holes seem to be done with paper punch and no cartridge data is provided. i had two crude cz 602s in the past and they were both excellent shooters.

If it's a normal Drilling, (1 rifle and 2 shotgun barrels), and it has a scope, then it doesn't matter too much what it's regulated for. Just chose a load and adjust the scope. Or adjust the front sight height if it only has open sights. Colt developed an association with JP Sauer & Sohn at the end of the 1960's and I don't think Sauer Drillings of this period are stamped with a working load. My 1956 S&S 7x57R Drilling has no such mark.

Regarding paper-punch holes; RWS use a style of bullet developed by Wilhelm Brenneke that have a "sharp-rim", that cuts paper-punch like holes in paper and which are intended to do the same thing in animal hides. I saw these factory targets being shot at an indoor rifle testing range in Steyr - no shortcuts there !

The good news is that it is a drilling not a double rifle. With only one barrel to worry about, you will find a commercial load that will be very close to the factory sight at seventy yards or so. Remember too, that no German would have a drilling in such a caliber without a set of claw mounts and a scope. The open sights were for drive hunts where hare, pheasant, and huns were the primary game, but also where a big boar might also flush. Any shot would be very close and the small pop-up sight was perfect for a quick rifle shot for what was primarily a shotgun hunt. Whenever he would sit for roe deer (or late night posting for boar over bait), he would have a telescopic sight mounted (usually a very good one) and then the shotgun barrels were secondary for fox or a stray cat. J.J. at Champlin Arms does a great job on claw mounts should you ever be so inclined.

BTW, that German Gun Collectors Forum did not last long at all. It now shows "Status Inactive" when you log on. I signed up as one of the first few, then a total of 25 more, according to the site. But, it doesn't work any more. I do indeed wish there were a working site such as it intendended to be. Anybody know what happened to Steve and the site so quickly?
