i want to know if say win AA target loads are safe (under or around 8000psi)to shoot through a twist steel lefever or a early fox sterly or model 11 rem.

thanks

Drew, the 'safetoshoot' link is very convincing evidence!

Ed, other than perhaps the "low recoil/low noise" AA's, I'd certainly recommend against it. Federal did a special run of low pressure shells, in Gold Medal hulls, for vintage shotguns for Midway. Don't know whether they're still available, but they're 7/8 oz loads at around 5,000 psi if I recall correctly.

Larry,

Federal has discontinued those shells. No explanation. I suspect poor sales as they warned they would not operate most semi-autos. I purchased a few boxes to feed my damascus guns. They were a good product.

I shoot a lot of Damascus and Twist Guns and I would not shoot any American shotshell as a general RUle(except RST). There are too many excellent European shells that are suitable for our purpose. Rio Trap 28, Kemen Super 28 (both 7200 psi), Gamebore XLR 7000psi, B&P Competition 28 gr. (6600psi)and Fiocchi 28 gm Game and Target(about 7000psi) for examples. When I look at the Winchester extra lite 1 oz fired case and see a FLAT primer it makes me NERVOUS. Federal told me to assume that all of theirs were 10000psi which is probably overdramatic, but who knows?

Keep in mind that there is NO formula to convert BAR expressed as LUP (European/British CIP) to PSI (US SAAMI). Actual pressure testing by Armbrust, at least with 16g loads, has shown the European (CIP) loads to run pressures higher than they calculate.
The B&P 16g F2 Classic is factory listed at 9,867 psi but testing by Tom Armbrust showed it to be 10,500. Gamebore Traditional Game 16g 28gm (1 oz.) is reported to run 8122 psi but testing showed it to be 8400 psi.

This is the chart for B&P showing the bar and psi pressures.
I shoot the Competition 2000 a lot and they are of excellent quality and low to moderate pressure.

Leighton: B&P is simply using the conversion formula of 1 bar = 14.50377 psi. It's close, but underestimates the psi by the SAAMI technique, esp. at higher pressures.
