OK,
I'm about ready to undertake my first rust reblue on a set of Sauer barrels. What do I need to do about the screw holes in the bottom rib where the sling swivel attaches? I plan on leaving the sling swivel off after the reblue, as I don't personally care for them. I guess I can reinstall the screws without the swivel after the reblue (which wouldn't bother me too much) Also, there are three holes in the rib, two where the screws go, and a third in between them whose purpose is unknown. As boiling water kills rust, would it be best to boil them with the screw holes open and then try to make sure I have all the water out of the ribs to prevent future rust, or do I need to get the holes plugged up tight before boiling. It seems that if that is the way to go, I could use the screws on the two holes that are threaded, but what about the third hole? Thanks!

Jay,
Some barrels have a "weep" hole in them, I guess for the reason stated to let water out from rustings. I would and do leave them open.

Due to the location of the swivel holes on the barrels, they are unsightly (to me) to leave open. The best alternative I've seen is to cut or grind off the head of the swivel screws even with the rib and spot-blue to match as well as posible. The "weep-hole" is usually located under the fore-end and is probably best left alone...Geo

OK, thanks for the advice. So, how do you ensure that all the moisture is dealt with between the barrels via the weep hole when you're done? Plop in the oven for a few? Unfortunately, my weep hole happens to be under the sling swivel. I can live with it open, I guess. I thought about tapping it, and installing a screw that's flush with the rib....

Jay, I plug holes on my blacking jobs with lead shot then remove it after, that way if you sell the gun the sling swivel can go back on, grinding off the swivel screw heads is more tidy though, if you have a weep hole you can chase out any water by running some heat up and down the barrels, but go easy if the ribs are tinned!! good luck.
