As a self-defense weapon, what rifle cartridge do you think would be approximately equal to a .410 slug, fired from a shotgun? For instance, at close range where accuracy was a non-issue, would a .44 WCF from a Winchester 1892 be more or less effective? Thanks!

I think a .44 WCF would be more effective - I would suspect a .410 Slug would be a little less than a .40 S&W and a little more than a .38 Spcl + P.

All of the pistols that shoot .410 shells shoot .45 Long Colt also, so I think that is what you will be looking to shoot for a proper fit.

.410 slugs should be at least as effective at close range as a .44WCF; they make a .45 hole. But I think a better choice for self defense would be the various buckshot loads available. At very close range they make a nasty "rathole"; a little farther out they make a loose group, which depends on its size and shape on the choke and distance, like any pattern. But you can aim a little off and still do damage and the three 000 or five 00 pellets don't penetrate nearly as much as a single slug. So less chance of "collateral damage" (also known as shooting your neighbor accidentally).

DON'T shoot a .45 Long Colt in a .410 bore!

Shooting a .410 Slug in a .45 with a long barrel and the slug will "bounce" down the barrel.

Those .410 slugs are puny, fragile little things, weighing less than 100 grains. A 44-40 with its standard 200 grain bullet is much better -- out of Winchester 92 a 44-40 with SAMMI spec 200 grain bullets at about 1200 fps will be closer in power to a 44 Mag from a revolver. I would much prefer a 32-20 or 32 H&R lever gun to .410 slugs. GunBlast has an article about .410 slug and buckshot loads vs 45 Colt in that Taurus revolver "The Judge". He looks at muzzle energies, etc.
