Just wondering if someone has a site that lists all the latest federal-approved blends/alloys, their applications and their cost. I'm considering shooting a Damascus percussion double on refuge lands where lead is prohibited, and need an altnerative to steel. I checked the "EcoTungsten" and at $60 plus shipping for 2.2 pounds, it's much more expensive than the bismuth was. Gad!

I think you may find that the Tungsten shot is not recommended for use in the softer damascus barrels without a fully protective shot cup. I think Bismuth would be much safer. Lagopus.....

That's all well and good but where can you buy it for reloading these days? It's just not available.

Lagopus: That's discouraging. Oh to have stashed a few bottles of No. 5 or 6 Bismuth back in the day ...

We can still get Bismuth from Eley here in the UK. I believe that it is back in production over there chaps? I do not like it myself, I prefer TM and we have fibre shot cups to carry it, available from Kent/Gamebore.

Kent's Tungsten Matrix--which, as Salopian points out, is available in 2 1/2" shells for older doubles--is as safe in a Damascus gun as any other equivalent 2 1/2" modern lead load.

Thanks for the information. I could at least cut open some shells to get shot for the muzzleloader.

Well, after a bit of googling it looks like tungsten polymer/matrix shot is probably the best lead substitute for use in damascus barrels. Now to find some in bulk that is affordable. Hah!

Salopian,
We can't buy the Kent TM here in bulk for reloading. Kent USA only sells it in loaded shells.
The new company that's loading bismuth is the same way, they only sell it in loaded shells.
Bill,
The new NiceShot is easy to reload by all accounts but isn't cheap even if you buy loose shot and roll your own.
I'm hearing good things about the new ITX shot that Ballistic Products is selling but haven't gotten to try any myself as of yet. It's a little bit cheaper than NiceShot at least.
A friend has been hunting for old bismuth shells at clearance prices then cutting them open to reload the shot. He's had decent luck buying 3 1/2 inch 12 gauge shells for a good price as there seem to still be a lot of those floating around on the market. He's having to look awfully hard and then wheel and deal to get a good price though.
