Assuming we have a J Purdey & Sons and a Henry Atkin 12 bore SLE game gun. Both best quality, same period, both identical in every way. Will they be priced the same, or will the name alone cause one be priced differently, and if so, by how much?

Yes, assuming it has 'a spring opening of the Beasley/Purdey style.' Don't want to split hairs here, just speak to the value the name may or may not carry.
thanks

Atkin did use the Beesley type action but modified it slightly to make it easier to close. Some think the Atkin variation is superior.
In answer to the question, you would probably achieve similar money for the guns if you held out. You may see a drop in the price of 10% on the Atkin in relation to the Purdey.
Unfortunately, the name recognition factor carries a bit of a premium.
The Purdey would sell faster because more people recognise the name. The Atkin would find a discerning buyer because if its quality.

Per my research, the Atkin or other BV2 name (Westley Ricahrds, Dickson, Rigby, Grant , Beesley, Powell, Atkin, Churchill, Henry, Lancaster, Evans, Watson, Wilks, Greener, Boswell, Gibbs, and Lang) will value at 2/3 of the Purdey's (H&H, Boss or Woodward) value for USA retail of a 12 bore SXS of 1890ish to 1960ish vintage.

There are quite a few on your second tier list that were better known for their rifles than guns. Some of these brands never made, what would be called a best gun - some made much more of the lower quality off the rack stuff - like Westley. So, if your using the sidelock ejector as the tops?

I do not assign maker's names to "tiers." Rather, I report market research findings on maker's names Brand Value. Brand Value tells you the premium the market is willing to pay to have the individual maker's names appear on a gun. Brand Value is independent of Original Quality grade and Current Condition level.

Always keeping in mind that, Purdey a "Name" and a "Reputation" earned not given or assigned by the world's or Hollywood's elite!!!

The same hold true for Parker vs A.H. Fox. Both were top quality American made boxlocks and in some cases the Fox's quality surpasses that of the Parker. Grade for grade the Parker will always command a somewhat higher price because of it's name.
Just My Opinion.......George

And, assuming this to be true, we could say that Parker has higher BV level than does Fox. How about LC to Parker and Fox? Ithaca? Lefever? Is there a BV lineup for USA makers?
