I was at a pigeon shoot a few weeks ago and there was one gent shooting a Beretta hammer gun 12ga 30" or 29.5"??? barrels with Briley thin walls, slight beavertail. I shot his P shooter a few times and now I would like one. I'd like to use it for waterfowl, must be modern since I like to shoot Hevi-Shot and maybe take it out for flyers shooting Remington Flyer loads or B&P. Did a search on the web and didn't find anything. He told me he paid $1950 for his and I would like to keep it in that price range since it might be one of those once a year deals.

Second the V. Bernardelli hammer guns. Not sure who imports them now, but they are solid guns and reasonable as these things go. Not sure if the Italias come with 3" chambers in 12, tho. The bores are chromed with an alloy that's harder than woodpecker lips from the Petrified Forest as we used to say in Sonoma County--chamber lengthening is at the peril of your reamer(s). I have a 16 Italia from the middle of il Duce's time; old but still good. I'd suggest the plain Italia for ducking.

Would you be interested in an original high condition 1920's Griefelt 12 bore with long barrels and .060 chokes in both? It is an older gun but nitro proofed and will handle modern loads in it's VERY thick Krupp steel barrels. It may be a bit more than your price, but only a bit. Has outstanding tiny English scroll engraving and very good wood. It is indeed a far-reacher. drop me an email off line at kinglarr@knology.net if interested. I'll pay Dave his fee if we get together.

What about one of those self cocking Siace hammer guns with the tang safty. They are modern and made in several models beginning around the figure you are looking for. I saw one on Gunbroker a couple of weeks ago with a "buy it now" price of $2,200...Geo

I think Bernardelli's are great guns. I shoot a 28 ga. hammer ( yes, I know that in the book, it states they didn't make a 28 ga. but I have one ) and a 20 ga. hammer. Both shoot very well for me and seem very well built. I don't think you can go wrong with one. Thanks, Frank

They're nice guns just not as nice as the asking price...I think they are $1000 to $1200 guns.

Very occasionally, a high condition steel barrel Remington shows up on the market. They are pretty tough but not stocked for pigeons. An ideal pigeon hammer gun would be a medium high condition ten gauge Parker with chamber inserts, either permanently inserted or not. I have also seen ten gauge hammer Prussian Dalys with permanent 12 gauge chambers that would have been great flyer guns. Ten gauge Parkers and Dalys are normally stocked quite stoutly.
