Any help would be appreciated. If i'm going to continue in the double gun world it appears to me i'm going to need 1 of these things eventually. Ebay has a bunch on the site can someone recommend a decent bore micrometer. there seems to be a number of sizes and it sure would be nice to get 1 that covers the majority of bore sizes.

You can get a Skeet's bore mic that covers 12 and 16 ga. for $90.90 from Brownell's and another for 20 and 28 ga., same price. If you qualify for their "trade discount", the price is $77.30. I've used them for years and am happy with the Skeets version. Or, you can spend $500 for a set that will include .410.

If you are going to invest a considerable amount of money in shotguns, then a measureing set that will read the barrel diameter and choke measurements anywhere in the barrel is essential. I purchased the Professional set from CSMC and have been very happy with its construction and performance. It settles all questions one might have. http://www.csmcspecials.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=T0170 -Dick

Go with the Skeet's. It's way more accurate than most of us will ever need. And it is very portable, fits easily in a briefcase--think "gunshows". My gunshow tools are: Skeet's bore gauge, wall thickness gauge, Galazan chamber gauge, electronic fish scale, tape measure, magnifing glass, and snap caps. All fit into a light aluminum case. Might sound like overkill but it has saved my butt many times. It is amazing how many bores and chambers have been fiddled with and safety issues are only revealed with the gauges. Undoubtably the best portable wall thickness gauge I've found is sold by Jonathan Pool of Fine Firearms, (619-280-8600).

I just looked at the Brownell's catalog. I have the gauge with 2 heads (10-12-16; 20-28). I see it's the same price to buy two complete gauges. I think I'd do that, then when going to a gun show, simply take the head off one (along with the ring to set it) and tote that along with the other complete gauge. Simple enough to swap heads and recalibrate, and by buying two gauges you have an extra rod and dial, just in case something happens to your other one. Would seem to me there ought to be a fairly decent discount if you buy just the gauge with two heads, but there isn't.

Wall thickness gauge, Joe? That is an important piece of hardware to take along too. Please tell us about it Mike

Dick, agree with you whole heartedly. The Galazan gauge at $450 is expensive, but accurate. I've had one for acouple of months now, and it is great. I believe it will pay for itself many times over, if my interest in double guns continues.

Need to have a care with the phenolic shaft on the Skeets. Otherwise, Larry Brown's advice on an all gauge bargain is good advice.

Tom--Put it on the "for sale" board, then you're legit. You owe Dave $10 if you sell it.
