Have an English sidelock with Chilton Locks. It is difficult to read the initial in front of the word Chilton. I believe it is probably an E. Any advice if this is for Edwin or Edward. Some other initial. There is no and Sons after the name. Believe the gun was made between 1900 and 1908. Right lock Left lock Appreciate any input. Cold winter day and exploring minutia. Thanks. tim

Thanks Daryl. Appears Edwin is the answer to my question. Gotta love this board. Always good information.

Hello Tim,
Interesting that four Brazier ladies were into locksmithing, plus Sarah Whitehouse.
I wouldn't mind at all having a lock made by a lady, on the contrary, they must have been very meticulous at it.

Jaycee,
It was not as uncommon as most would suppose. I have found several. What I believe is rare, is to find a lock with a woman's name on it. It is more usual to find women listed as action or lock filers and polishers in the English census records.

JayCee, a quick glance shows the ladies from Brazier to be widows of the lock makers. Not to say, they did not have a physical part in some end of the lock making. I suppose, especially in the larger lock shops, parts of locks were "sourced" like in Birmingham gunmaking.
