Looking at going out west on a hunting trip next fall and dont want the hassle of checking guns at the airport.
I know you can via UPS or FEDEX. Does anyone have the reg for USPS that says the same? I think its allowed but want to see the reg. Not asking for anyones interpretation of the law, just for the link to the section.
USPS is much better and if they are damaged they will actually pay the claim.

I can never find anything in the USPS DMM for the shipment of firearms. Furthermore, they do not control the transfer of firearms (i.e. they do not ask if you are shipping a firearm). The regulation you are looking for is 27 CFR 478.29a as copied below. As long as you can prove, at the time of receipt, that you are participating in an open season in the state of receipt.

§ 478.29a Acquisition of firearms by
nonresidents.
No person, other than a licensed importer,
licensed manufacturer, licensed
dealer, or licensed collector, who does
not reside in any State shall receive
any firearms unless such receipt is for
lawful sporting purposes.

Just my thoughts Brian, but may be simpler in the end to walk them thru the airport and check the guns. Some peace of mind in seeing them most of the way thru their journey. Maybe a little more of a pain up front, but worth it in the end to see the guns arrive when you do, at the other end. Hope all is well with you.

i would personally trust the USPS to handle them better and more securely than an airline. any gun of reasonable weight, you can get it across the lower 48 priority mail insured for $25-30 which is what you'll pay at the airline for an extra bag fee. i've never had a gun lost or damaged by USPS. airlines, the horror stories abound, not to mention the pure hassle. got a buddy who's from MT and goes back hunting all the time. he just finally left guns up there with friends so he doesn't have to go thru DFW with them. his brother lives in chicago and said it's even worse.

regarding USPS, in right at 900 pkgs of junk i've gotten rid of on ebay, there's never been one lost or damaged. USPS gets a bad rap.

I think the point is that "company" rules do not prohibit and the ATFE does not prohibit shipping arms to oneself. Otherwise, the overall caveats above are all that pertain. Most of the language you will find involves shipment to others.

I am preparing to ship a gun via USPS priority with a value of $2500 that I'd like to insure and the insurance alone is $25.00. With shipping, tracking, and insurance, I'm being quoted a bit over $50 by the online tools at USPS. How is it that folks routinely quote $25-30 shipping costs that include insurance? Am I using the wrong shipping method?

Thanks for any insight to more cost-effective shipping via USPS.

Try recalculating the shipping costs sending it Registered mail. The insurance costs should be less than using regular priority mail for that valuation. Will probably be more than $25-$30 though.

every time its changes hand the person must sign for it.Safer and cheaper,it does take longer thou.

I suspect if Holder gets in as AG this will all be changed and shipping will be banned or held to the few 01 FFL dealers left.

I just sent a gun from NY to MS. Registered Priority Mail, insured for $2500. It cost $42. This hasn't hasn't changed for a year or so.

If you ship Registered the cost of insurance is less than shipping priority or 1st Class alone.

I insure my guns for replacement value which includes all work I had done to make it the way it is.
