I came across nicely restocked L.C. Smith attributed to Niels Thayer (sp?) supposedly of Portland OR. I can't find any reference to Thayer in my reference books. Anyone ever heard of him? Thanks very much. Silvers

I've seen two pieces stocked by Thayer, one an '03 Springfield, the other an XE Fox. The friend I got the Springfield from lives in Portland and knew of Thayer. He said Thayer had been a machinist who made stocks for himself and friends. His work on both these guns was quite competent though the Fox had been stocked with a pretty garish piece of claro. From what I heard it seems he must have made only a few stocks. The quality of his inletting was impressive.

I may now own the Thayer Springfield mentioned above. Bill, I got the rifle from Monte - do you know if it is the same one?

The lines of the stock are suggestive of R G Owen's work - not a bad model to follow! Like too many artisans, he failed to sign his work. That is my only objection to it; classic lines, well executed, conservative wood selection in this case.

Silvers, I've spelled his name as you do - so we may be consistently incorrect.

Yes, the '03 in Michael's photo is one I once had. It shot very fine groups. The fluting on the nose of the comb may be a Thayer signature detail since it also appeared on the Fox stock.

Thanks everyone for your replies. This is a L.C. Smith with a straight hand grip. Trigger guard looks like it stretched by welding. The nose of the comb isn't shaped like the Springfield, nothing too distinctive about it. Most unique feature is that the buttstock is very slim and trim. I'll try to get a pic or two to post. Thanks again. Silvers

Silvers,

Niel Thayer was very active in the Portland area during the 60s. I had a friend with DE and XE Foxes that Niel occasionally tuned.
He did great work--I remember how well he was able to tune chokes and chambers for max performance and also saw a badly dented Fox barrel that he made as good as or maybe better than new. To my knowledge my friends never had him make a new stock.
