I purchased a #3 Silvers pad from Galazan. After heating the pad to straighten it and sanding to level the mounting surface, I attached the pad to the stock.

As the pad was ground down it became evident that the substrate (black)thickness was getting thicker toward the bottom end. I called Galazan and the Technical Representative told me he would send another pad. While waiting for the other pad I continued to grind the pad to see if other thick spots would appear and indeed they did. The original thick spot lengthened to about 1 and 1/2 inch long and the original spot is now about 1/2 inch long. The thick spots are approximately 1/16th up to 1/8th inch thick.

When I received the new pad, I installed it and ground it down only to find that it also had a thicker spot that was beginning to show. When I ground the pad to within 1/16th from the stock wood, the thick spot became thicker and longer. It now is about 5/8 inch long. The thick spots (both pads) are approximately 1/16th inch to 1/8th inch thick--the substrate is normally 3/16th inch thick and the thick spots increase this up to 5/16th inch at the thickest point. I looks awful!!

Question: Do Silvers pads typically exhibit these defects? If not how can I be sure the next one is good, short of again grinding the pad close to the wood.

Luckily (financially), I ground the pads with the limited grinding tools I have and planned to take the gun to a local smith to do the finish grind. At this time I'm reluctant to again grind to find defects as my time to do this is not unlimited. The gun is a very nice CE grade Fox.

Hi Fox, I also have heard of this problem with the Galazan pads. I was told to avoid this is to get the original Silvers (you can still get them). They are more pricy, but you won't have the problem you are having.

I'm having one put on my Charles Boswell as we speak. The cost for the Silvers is about $70. But worth it.

gjw is correct. I installed the $70 pad on my 16 ga A grade Fox and had no problems, other than the $70 price. I'm putting a Noshoc
repo pad from Galazan on my 16 ga elsie this weekend. Hope it does not have your same issues.

At this point I am confused: This pad is not the orange Galazan pad.

Galazan advertises it as a Silvers pad and it is marked as such in the mounting surface side recess. This pad is red not orange.

I had the same problem with a Galazan Hawkins pad I was having installed on a Parker.

I have problems with the Galazan orange pad. It is hollow and once you grind the top and bottom down to where you want it, the top gets kind of thin over the hollow spot.

Fox, are you saying that the pad you are having trouble with is an original Silvers pad? I don't think some of the posters are reading your post correctly. I wonder if the original Silvers pad sold by CSMC is an original Silvers pad?

I have an original Silvers pad with the tip for a Parker that I have sat on for 40 years. Let me know if it would help, it's new /old.

Hi all, Galazan does carry the original Silver pad as well as their own "Correct Period Pad" According to the catalog the Silvers pad is $75 and the Correct period pad is $35. I'm guessing that Fox got the Correct Period Pad.
