. . . .Interesting little thread over on the Shooting Sportsman board in this subject that offered two ideas I'd never heard of before. The first was the use of a Clorox wipe as a means of cleaning dirt, crud and the likes off of damascus. The contributor assigned the technique to Russ Ruppel and noted a good oil wipe after Cloroxing. I remember our explorations of a couple of years ago on using Clorox as a means of browning damascus barrels, but not as a cleaner. -Any other experiences with using Clorox for cleaning only purposes? The associated photo showed a nice clean barrel.
The second method centered on the use of simple black board writing chauk as a rubbing medium for cleaning barrel exteriors - - suggesting that an oil could be added to the process to help move things along. The gentleman noted the results of such a cleaning were shown on a barrel illustrated on page 135 of the Autumn '06 DGJ.
Am sure I will eventually try both methods. I can theorize some sort of light etching process resulting from the Clorox approach. Regardless, anyone else had experiences with either approach?
