First off, a big thank you to John Mann for allowing me to care-take the old 1883 Colt 10 gauge he had that was stamped in several spots AT&SFRR (Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad). Thanks John.

A big thank you to Bill Shodlatz for sending me 20 rounds of 10 gauge brass shells, appropriate wads and shot cards, and invaluable advice on how to load them, following a rookie question on this board about this old colt. Thanks Bill.

A big thank you to Peter Russo for sending me the hard to find Remington #57 primers to fit the brass shells. Thanks Peter.

A big thank you to Dale Edmonds for all the work he did re-blacking the barrels and bringing out the beautiful Damascus pattern on this old Colt. Thanks Dale.

A big thank you to Steve Bertram for all the work he did putting the old girl back on face to put her back in shooting condition. Thanks Steve.

Here she is on her first goose hunt with me last weekend on the Yellowstone River in Montana. The temperature was 28 degrees below zero, but I do believe it was about the most fun I’ve ever had. The big bore 3 ½ inch magnum semi-auto guys I hunted with were laughing at first, but were impressed in the end by how she performed. The load was 4 drams of Goex FFg and 1 ¼ oz of #2 Bismuth.

Dustin......good work takes time! Dale is the best as far as I'm concerned. I've learned so much from him and you can't ask for a better teacher and gentleman. No he doesn't pay me to talk nice about him or his work!

Griz......i'd love to see a close up of those barrels!

LeFusil...It took Dale 2-3 months to finish the barrels. It took longer than usual because he said this was one of the toughest set of barrels he had ever done. Dale was very good about keeping in contact and keeping me informed. He had to redo them 5 or 6 times to get the pattern contrast to come out like he wanted. Dale is a real perfectionist and I would recommend him most highly.

Looks like Mr. Edmonds has treated you right ;-) Gorgeous color and beautiful pattern. I asked how how long it took him cause I know for awhile he was VERY backlogged, he quoted me a time frame of 10 to 12 months. Which is well worth the wait when they turn out like yours did. Shoot that old Thumper in good health and may you and your old Colt have many more days afield!

Griz,

Very nicely done. Dale is a fine man. I have spoken to him many times, picking his brain. Steve is no slouch either. You choose well. You have given that gun another 100+ years.

Pete
