Here we go again. I now have new wood on my gun and am now thinking about enhancing the engraving of the dog and recase coloring the receiver. What is involve in stripping it down? Anything in there that will fly apart on me? I will try to take pictures as I go. I just want to improve its appearance to better than new. Im not planning a work of art. I have a nice Fox Sterlingworth for that later. The Western can be my practice piece. The Fox needs no metal work mostly wood.
Thanks again for the help

tomc,
I don't have any specifics on your gun but here's some opinions.
+Take clear pictures during the disassembly. Use ziplock bags for each part and a sharpie to label the bags (left hammer, etc).
+Re-assemble it once before you start the metal phase of the project - it might be a while before it's done and one re-assembly in the memory bank is a good thing.
+Anneal the reciever before you start the pre-engraving polish.

I'm hesitant to re-color case, even though pro's do it every day. Heat warped frames seem to affect us amateurs with perverse regularity.

The last gun I had re-colored did just that. A Parker GHE that got slightly warped and the barrels had to be refit. The same thing happened to my Parker as well. Although I have had three hammer guns two Fox's and a English boxlock done without any problems. I am hesitant as well.
