Hi All

I am just about to begin the building of a new rifle for benchrest shooting, it is going to be a Stevens 44½ with an RKS barrel in cal. .33-47 but I am not sure which type of butplate I should use, do I build it with a shot gun type or with a Stevens/Pope/Schoyen type butplate?

What are you guys using for butplates on bench rest shooting?

If anyone have a Stevens 44½ action for sale I would be interested.

Michael,

Do use a shotgun type if your are going to be shooting it benchrest. A couple of my Schuetzen rifles that I shoot from the bench have the prong type buttplate and are a pain. I have a leather cover for the top prong when shooting from the bench but it's not perfect. Are you sold on the 44 1/2? I have one rifle built on one a .22 but not my favorite action because of the difficulty of cleaning from the breech and the firing pin problems.

This has been my “Go-To” benchrest rifle for more years than I want to think about. I have fired ten’s of thousands of rounds with it. The barrel is by Niedner in caliber 32-40 throated for the 185 gr Hudson bullet, the stock is by Wills and yes, the action is an original nickel plated one. The buttplate is a Niedner style.

Hi Michael

Yes I have fallen in love with the 44½ action there is no reasonable explanation for this, I was wondering is your .22 a 22LR? And is it on a 44 or 44½ action.

I had one in m y hands, CPA made up at Wyoming Armory in Cody and it was just such a well made action that I have to own an original, I have one from CPA on the way to me in 38-55 with a RKS gain twist barrel on, I hope it will reach me before Christmas.

Yes I am aware of the firing pin problem but as far as I understand it is only on the rim fire models the broken pins occur and the one I have plans to build is a CF .33-47.

I don't want to get in the way of love . My experience is somewhat limited on the 44 1/2 Stevens to maybe three or four and ALL had a firing pin that was working but when removed it I found it broken. My Stevens 44 1/2 .22 has two barrels, one a Niedner false-barrel in .22 Short and another one in .22LR. Keep looking you will find what you want.
