I know the quick and easy answer here is to take the barrels to a qualified gunsmith. Before I do that though, I'd like to get some idea if it is worth the effort and gasoline. I have two sets of barrels from two different guns. The first is dark and pitted at least 2/3 of the length of the barrels from the chambers towards the bore. The other barrels are shiny bright with some spots of pitting scattered in places and some pitting in the chambers, though not enough to grab a fingernail. How does a layperson detrmine go/no go in these situations. I know this is a loaded question, but both of these are project guns that I would rather not spend anymore time and money on if the barrels are gone. I'd appreciate any insight and suggestions.

The only true way to tell, is to mic the barrels, for thickness. If they are thick enough, they can be honed to the max, to see if the pitting clears up, and then if not, you can have them sleeved. A wooden dowel rod, close to the bore size, can be split about 2" back and then you would insert a wood screw to tighten and expand to the inside of the bore, then slid back out and miced to give you the inside diameter, and then mic the outside at the same point, subtract the inside from the outside, divide by 2 and this is your wall thickness...I think? Now this is info just to get you in the ballpark, If you want to know for sure, or you think they may be borderline, a competent gunsmith is gonna be a necessity.

In B.R., LA, go to Reynesson on Hooper Road, or Ellis Tool, on Joe Sevario Rd., in Prairieville/Galvez area.
If you don't mind shipping it, Mike Orlen is fast and inexpensive. Email at, orlen@verizon.net
where are you in LA?
