Need to restock an old english SxS. Please advise name and phone of restocker and price range. Also will the value of the gun be less since it is restocked and not original?

Toby Leeds restocked one of my guns, and he did an excellent job. His contact info is: email: tleeds@dotnet.com phone: 920-921-9199

Prices are going to vary depending on several factors and what you want. A sidelock is more expensive to restock than a boxlock, more lines per inch in your checkering is more expensive, wood grade, etc.

Restocking a gun typically reduces the collector value of a gun. You have to weigh this against having a stock that fits you properly so you can shoot it. If you do get the restocking done, save the original wood. If the wood on your gun is in excellent shape and the gun is in vintage condition then, IMHO, I would not get the restocking done. If the wood is damaged, in very bad condition then I would likely have the restocking done. This is of course just my opinion. You have to decide which is the best road to take with the gun.

If you want to see pics of the gun Toby restocked for me just let me know and I'll post a link for you.

Stockmaker Boone Berlin lives and works about a block down the street from Ken Hurst. He's good and from what I hear, a real perfectionist as to methodology and wood to metal fit. He's a member of this board and can be reached at armedandfree@mac.com

What type of English gun? A Purdey sidelock or a Birmingham boxlock?

If the stock is done right, and you keep the old stock, I don't see the value being hurt much, if it all.

But the stock has to be done right. Hollands, Purdeys, Bosses, Woodward, etc - they all have subtle differences. If you're talking about a British best, you need to use a guy who knows about these differences and has done a lot of this type of work.

As for cost, I think a sidelock by a real pro is going to run $3,000+ wood.
