Thanks again for all of those who gave advice about my first sxs purchase. Today i brought home the gun. The price was right and the gauge is 16. Can you guys tell me what I have. Year, etc. I know it is a 16 with 70 chambers.
Marks are as follows (my digital camera just can't pick them up): 304 Choke 170 1kg191 u over (U with a * above). lion over PV. Crown over E over LG over * all in a circle. horseshoe with 16-70 inside.
Thanks, Stroud

I do not know what the 304 is. The choke I will leave for someone else. The barrels weighed 2.62 lbs when proofed. It was proofed in 1942. The Controller was Hubert Charlier. It passed the smokeless powder proof. It was proofed at the Liege Proof house. The gauge is 16 and the chambers are 2 3/4".

The 170 is 17.0mm for bore dia. This converts to .669" or +.007" over nominal .662" for 16ga. Choke simply means it has/had some degree of choke, but amount is unspecified. During some periods the Belgian proof house did mark choke size, but in those cases it will be marked with two sets of numbers. If it had for instance been marked Choke 16.3/17.0 then you would know it had .7mm (.028") of choke constriction.
