Attractive trap buttplate ending today on evilBay. It's only up to $610, so far. When will bidders learn that bidding early is akin to shooting oneself in the foot??? Of course, shills are prevalent... Wish the Biesen family should start making buttplates, again.
Posted By: Poorhouse Re: Trap Buttplate on Ebay - 04/05/14 04:10 PM
Well, now up to $750...
Posted By: SKB Re: Trap Buttplate on Ebay - 04/05/14 04:27 PM
gee I could not find it...

251490534928 "buttplate w trapdoor" from Alaska. Bet Michael is watching with amusement from above? cool
Posted By: SKB Re: Trap Buttplate on Ebay - 04/05/14 04:49 PM
From the name of the seller and the description, it looks to have come from Micheal's collection. I do not think you could have that made today for the current bid. It will make someone happy.

Yes, it was his buttplate. If you search here I'll bet you find a pic of it.
I thought the Springfield cocking piece sight would ring a lot more...
Posted By: SKB Re: Trap Buttplate on Ebay - 04/05/14 04:56 PM
I missed that one. A Lyman on a Springfield knob or something more rare?
Posted By: Terry Buffum Re: Trap Buttplate on Ebay - 04/05/14 07:43 PM
Joe helped Jan Wills with John's parts and is doing the same for Janet Petrov. I've logged him as a "Favorite Seller" or some such title on Ebay so I can see what treasures he has found. I presently have bids on three items from the two estates.

Glad to see such a nice gun part get the money it deserved. Was anyone out there the winner? If you are then I think you really got a nice piece.
And as to the criticism of how the auction and its bidders bid, I say it looked just like the way an auction should go for such a hard to fine piece.

They have learned, if you want good stuff, then you pay for it!

Yes, "Lyman on a Springfield knob" it brought $335 and the trap butttplate an astounding $890!!!
I'd sell my very similar one if anyone else is in the market at that price...

I'm about to list some stuff on ebay, maybe I'll add the trap buttplate along with Lyman sights?
Posted By: WJL Re: Trap Buttplate on Ebay - 04/06/14 12:50 AM
Decent trap buttplates are getting hard to find and approaching platinum in price. The one I acquired about a year ago for a Springfield project was almost $300. I thought I had gotten a bit crazy then. I'm glad I'm not looking for one now. At any rate the money this one brought is going to a good place. I hate to see Michael's "stuff" sold but I can't wait to see what's next.

Just by way of information, a nice Neidner Style Buttplate, Checkered with a Trapdoor, new or like new, sold early Friday morning. It was a steal at $160 Buy Now, I didn't buy it because I have a vintage one from the 30's and it seemed, this one was not that old/recent mfg. On another note, I would just comment that while a lot of Mr. Petrov's items will and should bring premium prices, but one should keep in mind that a Lyman 1A WINDGAUGE cocking piece sight already professionally installed on a cocking piece rod, in near mint condition sold on ebay a few months ago for $245. On gun parts especially, Buy the part...not the owner, even Michael said this..."Buy the Gun, Not the Story." I agree the money is going to a good cause, but I seriously doubt his family will be left wanting, after they auction off his gun collection! JMHO

Buy whatever you like, pay whatever you want and be happy to get the stuff that makes you happy. I always prefer stuff with a story, and a good cause, myself.

I bought that so called Niedner that was a Biesen trap buttplate and I didn't hesitate after Michael's hit $170 my top bid. I have one of those as well…but not from MP.

I'll be offering a Marbles tang sight for a Marlin next week, along with a Lyman for a 30 carbine and a couple more. I've got a bunch of vintage peep sights and always sell on ebay and let the buyers set the price.
Bid well...

I don't have the time to spend prowling eBay and GB. Would that the folks here who put this stuff up for auction could give us a heads-up when they do, please. I did luck into discovering this treasure trove yesterday thanks to this thread, and scored a steel grip cap that came from MP's stash. (Probably paid too much, but like Steven said, sometimes the provenance of the part makes it more special/valuable in my mind.)

I guess I'm just an old sentimental fool. I'd love to have something of Michael's on a rifle of mine. The full stock Krag I'm having built will have a forend tip that came from Joe Harz for the same reason. Nobody will know or care but me but it is important to me.

It would be great if someone could post a link to whomever is selling MP's stuff on ebay. Similarly, if someone was selling is rifles on gunbroker or elsewhere.

Steve, you might post a link to the stuff you are selling too. Quality gunparts are always of interest and often to friends, if not myself specifically.

My sentiments exactly. The Krag sporter the newly acquired grip cap is going on is based upon a Krag action I got from Joe Harz, and will sit beside the Krag varminter I got from Whitey.

Maybe it was just a real good weekend for gunparts. I'm building a 3 custom Marlin lever action .22's and was watching a steel crescent plate, it went for 110.00$. Twice what they normally seem to go for and a broken but complete mag tube assembly went for 355$! CRAZY! and to think I am building new tube assembly's for 2 of the customs.

BrentD,

Here is the link to Joe's listing of Michael's book. You can move from that to his other listings - which are minimal today.

I think I found something good this past weekend in an ebay auction, does anyone see what could be a nice gem in this group of butt plates?

nice score in the upper left corner
Posted By: BrentD, Prof Re: Trap Buttplate on Ebay - 04/08/14 06:36 PM
Yea, if you don't want the steel one - let me know. I'd cover your bid price for all 7.
Posted By: PhysDoc Re: Trap Buttplate on Ebay - 04/08/14 06:39 PM
Thanks SKB, the one in the upper left was the one I wanted, I kept thinking that
someone was going to spot it and bid it up. It should arrive tomorrow. I will take some pictures and post them here.

Whats the going market cost for a good Niedner these days?
Posted By: RHD45 Re: Trap Buttplate on Ebay - 04/08/14 09:01 PM
I think Brownells has them for under $30. I remember buying them for $3 each and a trap door Albright was $18.
Posted By: SDH-MT Re: Trap Buttplate on Ebay - 04/08/14 10:18 PM
If the lower right is steel, but I don't think so...
Posted By: james-l Re: Trap Buttplate on Ebay - 04/09/14 01:28 AM
Anyone know who made this buttplate? Not as nice as the one above, no spur, but heavier than the Albright ones.

Posted By: PhysDoc Re: Trap Buttplate on Ebay - 04/11/14 01:03 AM
The butt plates that I won on ebay arrived yesterday, I was really only interested in the Niedner-style butt plate that looked like it had been color case-hardened. Here are pictures of it.

side2

I like the butt plate, whether it is an actual Niedner butt plate would be difficult to say.
Posted By: Alvin Linden Re: Trap Buttplate on Ebay - 04/11/14 03:02 AM
I may be mistaken, but every Niedner buttplate I recall having seen on Niedner Rifles AND REMOVED, are marked one way or the other, including the two on my rifles. They are marked Niedner Rifle Corp. in small stamped leters. HTH

Was the Checkered Win. made out of steel?

Did anyone ever identify the make and vintage of the engraved color case hardened trapdoor buttplate posted by james l above?

I bought several of them decades ago and was told by the seller that they were Belgian circa 1960s, but I have no other evidence to support that.

I will be posting some of them on Gunbroker in the next few days, so it would be helpful to have some more reliable information about their origin.

Thanks in advance for any help!

For anyone interested, I have posted some of the engraved color case hardened trapdoor buttplates (above) on Gunbroker:
