Is anyone making a 20ga/22rf over/under similar to the old Stevens 410/22? Specifically looking for a smooth bore .22, but that could be post-purchased arranged.

Did anyone ever make such a gun? I know Savage made 20 ga x .222, but not .22 rimfire to the best of my limited knowledge on these.

A friend is looking for a collecting gun - bird collecting, not gun collecting.

OR, use this in a 20 gauge over/under or side by side

What would really be useful would be nice, light, 16 double with a .22 Hornet underneath. If only I were King!

This would be strictly a bird collecting gun, so no need for a .22 rifle of any sort, but .22 shotshell, yes. Light would be another factor.

skeetx, Yes, that that is probably right in line with what I was thinking of. I didn't realize they came in 20 gauge. I once owned a 410 version from Stevens.

The side by with adapter is definitely an option, but it would have to be a twin trigger gun. Inertial triggers would not set the second barrel. Though I'm not sure that they would ever be fired in rapid succession, so that may be moot too.

Anyway, thanks for those. Now I know what to look for.

Brent,
He might check with Simpson Ltd. for a 9mm rimfire, they have had several single shots, they may have one of the SxS combos with the 6mm Flobert on the rifle side. The 6mm is so close to 22 that most people just shoot 22 CB or Shorts. Mine will take 22 LR also, so 22 shot is a possibility in it.

.22 birdshot cartridges are virtually ineffective at anything over 10 yards or so and even at that I would never shoot at a game bird with them.

Yes, DAM16. I fully realize that, and that is why I said this is a collecting gun. She needs a dickie bird and lbj gun suitable for 15 ft, not 15 yards.

Just curious, but how will the 20 ga. be utilized in collecting? Something like 9s at a longer distance? Don't know anything about collecting bird specimens for preservation.

Chiappa makes a 22lr/shotgun O/U.

There are quite a number of of Savage 24's available in that combination also.

There are a number of old German drillings available in 16/16/22H or 16/16/222 Rem(easily loaded down to Hornet velocities). I hunt coyotes with combo in 12ga/5.6x50R and 12ga/22 Savage Highpower(5.6x52R) and a drilling in 16ga/16ga/6.5x5R Sauer. These are perfect for harvesting coyotes in the thicker brush where you might not see one until he is at your shoelace or standing on the hill across the valley and not have to pack two guns.

The Marlin Model 90 could be had in a number of combination barrels also:

How many "dickey birds" does it take to make a decent meal?

You really dont need a smooth bore for .22 rf shotshell. They wont do a thing to rifling, and rifled tubes wont make those shells any less useful than they currently are.

I dont know a single thing about bird collecting (our two cats could comment credibly), but on the surface I would venture a BB gun might do less damage, plus cost WAY less in terms of ammo, carry lighter, and operate quieter.

The OP didnt say why the user desired a combo gun...a shotgun of any gauge would seem like too much for such purposes, unless limiting shots to extended distances.

If a combo gun is desired, though, for the price and availability, Savage model 24 is your huckleberry. They made nearly 2 million of them between the 40's and 90's (originally the Steven .22/410, but redesignated Savage 24 from 1950 onward.) There were quite a few combinations offered, using .410, 20 or 12 underneath, and .22lr, .22wmr, .22 hornet, .222, .223, .357mag/max or .30-30 on top.

I am unaware of any smoothbore .22lr variants, but as stated previously, those tiny (and near worthless, IMHO) shells were dedigned to fire from any rifled .22 lr.

Before he/she jumps for .22 shotshell, I'd suggest a Crossman or Daisy pellet gun test. Won't cost much.

I should add, like all Savage guns, they are about as stylish as a Chevy Vega. Also they tend to be a crap shoot in terms of regulation. Ive had a couple that were laughably poor, but own two currently that are freekishly accurate to the same point of aim. Hands down, my all-time favorite small game hunting guns (both mid-60's era, and .22lr over 20ga.

Savage has made some great "working man's" guns over the years...purely by accident, as evidenced by inconsistacy and finish. But for the used market price, the Model 24 is generally a winner.

I'm certain Dan Lefever is quite offended I house such 'hardware store tools' in proximity to his handiwork, but...I only have one safe. *s*

The 9mm shotshell and 22lr combination guns are great.
The 9mm shotshell is surprisingly effective.
I've owned and used many of these

For 22lr shot, I have a smooth bore Remington that is very handy and the 22 shotshells are quite useful at relatively close range.
I've killed hundreds of small farm pests with it.

Nudge and Tinker thanks for the comments. I think the Savage is the way to go.
