Does anyone else wonder why some dealers will use a POR instead of a listed price for a few of their guns? When I see these I make a note to avoid these guns like the plague. I can only guess the motives. One would be the price is sooooo high that the seller would embarrass himself to put into writing on paper, this incredable price of said wares. (I know that there are companies that do not allow dollar advertising, but that is not what I'm talking about here). Or is it simply so they can adjust the price to market fluxuations?? Which sounds logical, but they lost me as a potential buyer. Any other thoughts on this??

Some guns are priced that way because the retail price is not set in stone. Call and get a current price for the gun. Clay target guns tend to have a very fluid pricing. Also some dealers like the chance to beat other prices by talking directly with the buyer.
Used gun can be priced that way because the dealer does not want to have others use an ad price to use as a guide for the guns market value. Like if you know what I am charging you consider it the going price. A few consignment seller do not want prices listed in the event people they know see their guns for sale. One person I know sold his collection on consignment and asked that the prices not be listed. Guess he did not want others to see what he was getting or at least asking for his guns. It was a pain for the seller I am sure.
N ow I am sure that if you call and ask a price and sound like a well healed smuck, with money and no brains, that the price quoted may go up. So always it is buyer beware.
In some cases I believe it is done to cause the uninformed potential buyer to believe it (in this case a gun) is something special and the price would be told only to "serious buyers". I know of one such P.O.R. gun that is not what it is advertised to be so the buyer must always beware.
P.O.R. =If you have to ask, you can't afford it.
POR = Once you buy it, you will be POoR.
The seller cannot decide about a price until he/she can hear your voice on the phone. Once you call, the more you talk the higher the price goes.
I thought it was because they were ashamed to post the price.
Its because they want you on the phone so they can try to sell you on a high end elephant. If they just post the price and run you off, there is no chance to fleece you.
Probably different reasons in different situations:
POR - Jet Rink (character in "Giant" movie) calls up New England Dealer and says in a strong West Texas accent "I just hit some oil wells and would like one of those English Purdey guns and see you got one. How much is it?" Answer "$60,000"
POR - Eightbore calls up same dealer about the same gun and asks a half dozen questions and then asks the price. Answer "$21,000"
POR - Same dealer and gun. Dealer bought gun from son of deceased friend $14,000. Son calls up and asks how much. Answer "16,500"

i figure on internet sales it's to cut down on tire kickers wasting their time.
but it's rare for me to see a gun sold by any venue that does not have a real price on it that i'll even ask about it. from when i used to get a table at shows w/ my dad, i saw dealers give 5 different prices to 5 different people. all i can figure is they've got a bottom line they really want for the gun and size up the individual to figure out how much above that amount they can get out of him.
i had a dealer at tulsa once hem and haw for 2 minutes to give me a price on a colt new frontier. i finally said "look, i drove 5 hours to get here. the shows been open a day and a half. if you've not figured out by now what you want for it i'm moving on." he didn't and i did.
if you're a legitimate dealer and the gun's for sale....PUT A PRICE ON IT!
